The first thing that comes to be answered is "white." I think it's an impression that comes from its sidewalks, made of small white tiles, smooth and uneven. In the old town the roads are like that, and embroidered in black.
Lisboa ... was. It 'been rich, long, for centuries. At the head of a huge colonial empire, and a lot of wealth has left the marks. We feel on the skin this ancient nobility, the air we breathe, but does not fall into snobbery.
Lisboa, in fact, è accogliente. E' una piccola capitale, facile da vivere e da percorrere, e un po' decadente. Anche nel centro economico della città sopravvivono negozietti minuscoli, con certe insegne e certi arredi che come varchi la soglia ti senti risucchiare indietro agli anni settanta e anche prima...
Lisboa ha degli abitanti gentili, di quelli che quando chiedi un'informazione si fanno in quattro per risponderti, e se non sanno orientarti fermano, loro, un altro passante perchè dia il suo contributo.
Lisboa ha i prezzi bassi ma resta, comunque, cara per un paese in cui lo stipendio minimo non arriva a cinquecento euro al mese. I ricchi, però, qua sono particolarmente ricchi.
Lisboa è contraddittoria, un po' al verde e at times a bit 'dirty. 'S full of shipyards and disorganized but kind, made amends.
Lisboa is an extreme edge of Old Europe, is projected on the ocean and in the balance between different worlds. But it failed to deal with its various identities without becoming schizophrenic.
